AN APPEAL

The history of Potter Caste in the Hindu Community goes back to the medieval age of human civilization in India.  When Varnashrama Dharma came into existence, people who were engaged themselves in preparing earthen pots became the Potters.  They became the hereditary artists of preparing earthen wares in the human society.

These Potters are called by different names in different parts of India.  “Kulala”, Moolya, “Kumbara”, “Handa”, “Gunaga” are some such names of potter caste who earlier lived in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu Districts of Karnataka State, Kasargod District of Kerala State and the neighbouring areas of Chickamagalur, Shimoga, Davanagere Districts of Karnataka State.  Their mother tongue is “Tulu” in Dakshina Kannada, Kasargod, Kodagu and parts of Udupi Districts “and “Kannada” in the remaining areas.

These people are generally poor, innocent, loyal, law abiding and respectable.  “Bhaktha Kumbara” was one of the renowned example for this.  They are socially, economically, and educationally very backward from time immemorial.  Poverty and ignorance are the main causes for their backwardness.  Their plight was further worsened by industrialization, as due to their poor economic conditions, they could not modernize their production methods.  Preference for aluminum and stainless steel vessels also adversely affected the demand for earthen wares.  They also lost their market due to fast urbanization and could not get equal value to their labour.  Therefore, they slowly changed their profession and became agricultural labourers, leaving only a few members in their age old profession.  Some of them even migrated from place to place in search of jobs for their livelihood.  Even today, most of these people live below the poverty line.  They were even deprived of the reservation facilities for employment, which they ought to have been provided if their actual economic and social status is considered.  They have no leaders of their own to represent them and fight for their cause either in the Parliament or in the State Legislature.  There is nobody to safeguard their interests.

Of late, some people of this caste who became educated to some extent and who realized the need for the upliftment of their fellow members, have formed Associations (Sanghas) in various parts of Karnataka State and outside where they had migrated and settled.  “Kulala Samaja ® Bangalore” is one such association formed by their people who were settled in Bangalore, the Capital City of Karnataka with the sole intention of uplifting their caste people socially, economically and educationally.  Since its inception the Samaja is doing all out efforts to achieve its goal and doing service to the community.

The Samaja is extending its helping hand, to the extent possible, to their people who are in dire need of financial assistance due to sudden sickness, natural calamities, accidents, higher education, etc., in addition to providing necessary other assistances like arranging for medical treatments, arranging for blood, obtaining assistance for self employment, obtaining financial relief from various organizations, assistance and guidance in getting employment, matrimonial matters, guidance to children to appear CET for professional courses, assistance in organizing and arranging social functions, etc.   The services rendered by the Samaja are being acknowledged by their people and others far and wide.

In order to serve their fellow members, the Samaja needs its own Cultural and Community Centre enter in Bangalore, to provide accommodation to their folks who come to Bangalore in search of jobs, or to pursue their education in the city or for some other purpose and who are not able to afford to spend much money for their stay in Bangalore.  For this purpose, the Samaja has already purchased a site in Bangalore and necessary building plan has already been prepared.

Since we in Kulala Samaja ® Bangalore have no donors of our own, we are approaching the esteemed donors to help us in our endeavor of achieving the upliftment of our people socially, economically and educationally, by donating liberally to our Building Fund, Education Fund and Relief Fund.  We, all the members of Kulala Samaja will be grateful to you for your kind gesture.

Donations may be sent to our S.B.Account No.10542, Union Bank of India, Avenue Road, Bangalore-560002 or to the Registered Office of the Samaja.  Necessary receipts will be issued on realization of the donations.
