| One Act Play / Christmas Party |
| In
early December we hold our annual One Act Play evening / Christmas
Party at the Bearsted WI Hall. These days we rarely see a one act play
(unless someone is practising to take on directing) so the evening is
made up of sketches / singers / novelty turns etc where members can
perform whatever they choose. This is the ideal opportunity for those
more nervous or inexperienced to try out their skills in a friendly
less nerve-racking environment. Inevitably the evening usually ends up
belonging to the kids though – being followed by an American
Supper and dancing. |
| Barn Dance |
| An
unusual choice, you may think, to be a regular event – but
nevertheless always popular. This began several years ago and is
usually held at Sandling Village School in the autumn. It’s a
case of the more the merrier so friends are always invited too. You
will usually find some people who’ll be a bit reticent at first
(me included), but after watching the guffawing and complete hilarity
as people do-si-do into each other or try to swing each other
‘round fast enough for the other to take off, they soon relent
and are joining in with the rest. Even those who aren’t fit
enough to actually dance will have a full evening’s entertainment
just watching and of course there is always the traditional American
Supper. |

| Fun Evening |
| Do
you remember those sorts of acting games you did at primary school or
they have at children’s birthday parties, well –
you’ve guessed it, this is the adult Chandeliers’ excuse to
behave as children again (the children can behave as adults if they
wish, but it’s not obligatory). The games can range from wink
murder to that one where you all link hands, get tied up in a knot and
someone has to untie you. There are more serious acting related games
though. We’ve had Chinese whispers through mime and the acting
out of sketches without having previously read the script. The evenings
are always different as they are organised by different people –
so you’re never quite sure what your going to get, apart from a
very ‘Fun evening’. |

Quiz Evening
|
|
Our Quiz
evening is a staple favourite among Chandeliers and their friends and
in order to better space out our events has become happily situated in
a February to March slot. Teams are usually six or eight people, but
not to worry if you haven’t got seven friends – providing
you bring your brain with you there’ll be any number of teams you
can join. It is expertly put together, with previous categories ranging
from current events through history to music and sport, but there is
always a chance of a lucky dip round with ongoing table quiz of
photographs, mnemonics or anagrams.

…And guess what? Our friend the American supper makes an appearance again..
|
| Theatre Trip |
| Around
June we usually try and organise a theatre trip, historically these
were to see a show in London, but latterly we visit either; The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury or The Churchill Theatre, Bromley. These are arranged via interest gauged in the Candle Drippings from suggestions received. |

Car Rally
The Car Rally / Treasure Hunt is
probably one of longest running social events. The format varies
slightly between organisers but the premise usually begins with
convening at Penenden Heath at 12:30 on what always seems to be one of
the hottest September Days. We then get handed sealed envelopes to take
with us back to our teams. Contained within are a number of names of
nearby villages with questions of varying difficulty pertaining to
them. The answers to which can all be found by visiting and exploring
the villages.

 |
| |
| There is a map so
you know not to walk too far and then it is just case of sauntering
through some of Kent’s most picturesque villages, noting anything
that could have been made into a clue: Signs, House names, peculiar
objects etc… There is always a choice of which village to visit
and there is no time limit but people usually start arriving back at
the organisers by late afternoon for a Barbecue. Traditionally the
winners would always organise the next rally but strangely enough this
did not encourage people to try and win, so this year it is the losers.
