An unpainted set is like a blank canvas, the potential is there to do anything - but until brush is put to set it lacks all life and vigour.
All levels of skill and experience are welcomed as many hands are needed to make light work.
The amount of painting required for any particular productions is dependant on the set, but any show using scenery will require some element of painting. The bulk of this work will be undertaken alongside the set constructing, but for more detailed work sometimes purely the base coat is applied with the rest being added once the set is erected on stage. With most plays having a box set, a simple stone wall effect could take hours to accomplish. As such a team will usually go down during the day on the Monday and Tuesday before the show opens.
Owing to the amount which usually needs to be undertaken a single person cannot accomplish it easily alone, thus a more proficient painter will usually direct the more inexperienced in order to get a 15'x20' backcloth painted in time.
