The set dressers rôle is essentially that of turning a house into a home and not only that but the home of the particular characters who live there. Where the backstage crew and props team provide functional items from furniture to telephones the set dresser provides nothing that is needed for the actor to use but everything which is necessary to make the environment believable. |

| The sorts of items the set dresser is responsible for could encompass pictures, plants, mirrors, cushions, curtains and rugs. Anything which will make the set look more authentic, taking particular note of the period, colour and size. |
| Set Dressing overlaps both the areas of props and set. Hence in some cases the props team may provide items such as plants and cushions, which are not functional. Just as the set may be decorated with a dado rail or stencil print. For musicals even if there is a set dresser it will be the props team who will become responsible for the movement on and off stage of such items during scene changes. |
