The rôle may at first glance appear quite a simple matter as plays will often have an example of the set design used in the professional production at the back of the script. There are a number of factors which will usually prevent an exact replica being used, they main one being the size of venue. As such, minor alterations at least will need to be made but as there is no reason to adhere to what has previously been done many directors may prefer a completely new design.
Functional
From discussions with the director, a knowledge will be gained of what the script dictates in terms of set and what the director may wish to add to this. This will include:
- A broad outline of what spaces are necessary;
a kitchen, a balcony, a garden etc.
- What size these spaces need to be.
These will be dictated by;
- The amount they are used within the production.
- How many people need to be there at any one time.
- What they are used for (if a musical liaison with the choreographer would be necessary at the point).
- What functional props may impinge on space and sight lines.
- What functional props there are.
Furniture, pictures or non-static items which may come and go.
- Any specifics as to the dimensions of the props.
There is no point having a three seater sofa if only two people ever need to sit on it.

Artistic
Liaison with the set dresser and lighting designer as to any specifications they would prefer is a good idea at this point. Though less essential, a few minor alterations could be all that is needed to assist the lighting designer or set dresser with what they want to do with the set which can make a big difference to the overall effect.
Practical
The most brilliant of sets may be, at first, designed to conform with everything the director wants along with any artistic elements - but unfortunately money is not no object, as such liaison with the producer as to what the budget can afford is essential. Similarly the props team need to be consulted as to the reality of being able to get that oval shaped bed. In the same way discussions are needed with the set construction team as to what they have in terms of materials and for how much any additional items can be obtained. Also transportation is a factor to be considered especially when it comes to our touring productions.
At this stage redrafts will have to be made and put to the director to agree etc etc etc.
