Welcome to 'Bugslayers R Us'. Well, we've been online for a little while now. Thanks to everyone who sent in feedback. Hey, maybe someday soon this will be more than just one page! That is, when the web-impaired site managers here are not as impaired as they currently are. Well, the rest of us aren't holding our breaths!

New...

The latest utility that joins the ranks is Thread Monitor (ThreadMon). Provides a detailed view of all threads in the system.

September 3, 2004

We'd like to point your attention to the new utility available at the top of the list below. The Process Cop (ProcCop). Latest in our line of published Windows(R) system utilities. And not only that, it's the first utility from us that has the Immortal(R) feature.  "What's that?" you may ask. Well, what's the most popular attribute of immortals? The next breaking news is that ProcCop is also the first utility to include the new Cloak(R) feature.

And for the final note : In time, we will republish some utilities previously released by our associates Hyper Operating Systems

And the utilities, here they are...

Last update : October 18, 2004

Thread Monitor (ThreadMon)
Windows NT4.0/2000/XP

As the name suggests, this is a thread monitoring utility. Provides detailed information on threads system-wide. Usage is quite self-explanatory. Features to note :

~ Double-clicking on a thread will popup the Thread Properties dialog

~ Auto Scroll will cause the list to ensure that newly created threads are visible

~ Items highlighted in green indicate that they are being created

~ Items highlighted in red indicate that they are exiting

~ The icon for threads is a 'spool of thread'. A green color spool indicates a running thread, and a red color spool indicates a waiting or blocked thread

~ Although a Kill thread feature is provided, killing a thread that one did not create, or write is not recommended as it may cause unpredictable and undesirable effects

The next version of ThreadMon will include 'thread creation notification' techniques, so that threads that start and end in between refreshes will be displayed.

Process Cop (ProcCop)
Windows NT4.0/2000/XP

Nowadays, it's a pretty fidgety time while being connected to any network. Be it a LAN, or the Internet. Or, even an indirect experience such as E-Mail. To cut a long story short, rogue programs/applications, though not with the greatest finesse, is a popular form of infiltration into a system, currently. Even while being connected to a LAN, the paranoid, and we mean that in a good way, are always suspicious if anyone is trying to launch applications in their system. Including system administrators!

Well, with ProcCop, you can decide what apps can/cannot be launched, and what processes can/cannot launch apps in your system!

Without further delay, and we're happy to say, in joint-R&D with HOS, let's get to the utility. The 'Filters' property-page in the 'Settings' dialog will describe how the filters basically work. The filters are what determines application launching. Therefore, if no filters are set, ProcCop will function as a process creation monitor. The only other tricky thing about it is the 'Close' box [X] will minimize the main log window. Minimizing to the system tray is available from the 'File' menu. We will make available some standard filters for the general user soon. Do check this column again.

Last but not least, we would like say a big Thank You to KahFui for his kind and generous assistance in the compatibility R&D of ProcCop for Windows XP(R), and also for being an unwitting tester.

Memory Allocation Monitor (MemAllocMon)
Windows 98/NT4.0/2000/XP

The last utility so far to be released by HOS, gives a more intimate look into an application's memory usage. MemAllocMon does so by monitoring a process's usage of the Win32 Memory Management functions. This includes the arguments passed in, and the results from the calls. You can choose to monitor any of the 'families' of the Win32 Memory Management functions. It also includes some nifty on-the-fly memory usage difference values, and an 'analysis' feature that lists un-released allocations. Instructions are included in the download.

NTWSecX
Windows 2000/XP

This Utility is basically a 'proof of concept'. This utility was developed to further protect a windows session. When a Windows NT station is locked, the current user, or an administrator can unlock the station. Therefore, other the current user has no complete protection from others unlocking their system. This is where this utility comes in. A simple utility that resides in the system tray. As usual, there is a context menu by right-clicking the tray icon. Operation is straight forward

'Settings' - Brings up the simple settings dialog. Here, a list of user names is displayed. Add and delete user names here. The user names that appear in this list are those that are allowed to login (following proper authentication processes) to the system.

'About...' - Displays the 'About' dialog.

'Install' - Installs (activates) the protection.

'Uninstall' - Removes the protection.

'Exit' - Closes the utility.

While this utility is 'installed' and activated, the 'Windows Security' dialog will have a few functional changes :

~ The following functionalities will be 'disabled'
   ~ 'Log Off...'
   ~ 'Shut Down...'
   ~ 'Change Password...'
   ~ 'Task Manager'

Proper user rights to install applications is required to run this utility.

File Deletion Monitor (FileXMon)
Windows NT4.0/2000/XP

FileXMon is a file deletion monitoring and protection utility for Windows NT based operating systems. Through the use of protection filters, you can specify what files in your system cannot be deleted, and you can also specify what processes can or cannot delete files. A most useful utility to have enabled while opening E-Mails and its attachments, and also while running programs downloaded from the internet as it is common for viruses and Trojan horse programs to delete files. FileXMon will display the files (under protection) that have deletion attempts made on them along with the process that tried to delete it. The files that appear in the display are not deleted.
